Although spiritual transmission can sound a bit woo-woo, there is actually science that can help us understand what's going on here. In this article, we’ll explore what spiritual transmission is, how it works, and how both ancient wisdom and modern science attempt to understand this mysterious process.

What Is Spiritual Transmission?Spiritual transmission is the process through which an awakened person shares or “transmits” a state of consciousness, energy, or awareness to another. Unlike teaching through words, ideas, or philosophy, transmission operates on a level beyond the intellect. It is often described as an invisible “spark” that awakens or amplifies latent awareness within the student.
Different traditions call this phenomenon by different names. In Hinduism, the term shaktipat refers to the awakening of kundalini energy through the grace of a teacher. In Zen Buddhism, masters sometimes speak of a “mind-to-mind transmission” that cannot be captured in words. In Sufism, seekers describe a heart-to-heart connection with the sheikh that ignites devotion and remembrance. Though the language varies, the essence is the same: transmission is the awakening of consciousness through direct resonance. How Spiritual Transmission WorksFrom both psychological and energetic perspectives, spiritual transmission can be understood as a process of resonance. Human beings are inherently relational; our nervous systems are designed to attune to one another. When we are in the presence of someone who is deeply grounded in peace or expanded awareness, our own system often begins to mirror that state. This is why many seekers describe feeling calmer, more open, or more spacious simply by sitting with an awakened teacher.
Spiritual Transmission & Resonance A useful way to imagine this is through the principle of resonance in physics. Consider how a quartz crystal regulates a watch: when the crystal vibrates at a precise frequency, it stabilizes and aligns the watch’s entire mechanism. Or think of how an opera singer’s sustained note can cause a glass to shatter—the glass begins to vibrate at the same frequency as the note until its structure cannot hold. In both cases, one vibration induces a response in another through shared frequency. Transmission works in a similar way. The awakened teacher rests in a “frequency” of expanded consciousness, nonduality, or no-self realization. In their presence, the seeker’s own consciousness begins to align with that state, often without effort. It is not that something foreign is imposed, but rather that what is latent within the seeker is activated—much like a tuning fork causing another tuning fork to hum in harmony. Just as two pendulum clocks placed side by side eventually synchronize their swings, a seeker’s nervous system can synchronize with the grounded presence of an awake teacher. This explains why even subtle, nonverbal cues—such as the teacher’s breath rhythm or relaxed body posture—can deeply influence the student’s inner state. The Neuroscience of Spiritual TransmissionModern neuroscience provides intriguing support for this as well. Research on mirror neurons shows that humans unconsciously reflect the emotions and states of those around them; we “catch” moods, body language, and even intentions without realizing it. Similarly, the science of nervous system co-regulation suggests that our physiological states—heart rate, breathing rhythm, and emotional tone—can synchronize when we are near someone else. Just as a child calms in the arms of a grounded parent, a seeker’s nervous system can settle and expand in the presence of an awakened mentor.
Some traditions explain this as the movement of subtle energy, such as kundalini awakening initiated through shaktipat. Others frame it as a psychological phenomenon, where the nervous system relaxes and mirrors the teacher’s state. Still others describe it as a collapse of mental filters, allowing awareness to shine through naturally. Regardless of the lens, the consistent theme is that transmission bypasses the analytical mind and catalyzes a direct recognition of presence. It is not about learning new concepts or rehearsing practices but about entering into alignment with what is already here. In this sense, transmission is less like receiving a gift and more like remembering a song that has always been playing within you, now amplified by another who is already attuned. The Experience of TransmissionThose who encounter spiritual transmission often describe it as unmistakable, though the form it takes can vary widely. Some report feeling waves of bliss or energy coursing through the body, while others describe subtle shifts—a quieting of the mind, a sudden spaciousness, or a feeling of unconditional love. Occasionally, transmission is accompanied by spontaneous movements, tears, or laughter, as blocked energy in the nervous system releases. In my own sessions, people often report feeling a sense of calm acceptance and freedom to express themselves authentically.
Psychologically, transmission often feels like being “seen” in a way that transcends words. The student senses a recognition of their true self, unfiltered by judgments or expectations. This recognition can catalyze insights, dissolve defenses, and give the seeker access to deeper self-awareness. Video: Example of Spiritual TransmissionTransmission in the Modern WorldWhile historically transmission has been experienced in monasteries, ashrams, and private encounters with teachers, today it is increasingly accessible in a global context. Online awakening groups, recorded meditations, and even written words are said to carry the energy of transmission. Though some may be skeptical of such claims, many seekers report genuine openings through digital mediums, suggesting that the essence of transmission may not be limited by physical proximity.
Scientific insights again offer some explanation. Even through screens, the human brain responds to facial expressions, vocal tones, and subtle cues that evoke mirror neuron activation. When combined with presence and the student’s receptivity, these subtle cues can catalyze shifts similar to those experienced in person. Still, the most profound transmissions often occur in the direct presence of an awakened person. The combination of subtle energy, nervous system co-regulation, and embodied example creates a uniquely powerful field for awakening. Spiritual Transmission & Self-ExpressionSharing one's truth is often a focus for transmission when seekers struggle to express their inner knowing. An awakened teacher’s presence can loosen energetic blockages in the throat area, leading to a spontaneous ability to speak one’s truth or express oneself more freely. From a psychological and physiological perspective, this may correspond with the release of tension in the throat, jaw, and breath, allowing the voice to flow more naturally. Whether framed as subtle energy or nervous system relaxation, the result is often the same: a greater alignment between inner truth and outer expression.
Final Thoughts on Spiritual TransmissionSpiritual transmission is the subtle yet powerful process by which an awakened teacher helps ignite awareness in others through presence, resonance, and energetic attunement. Drawing on both ancient traditions like shaktipat and Zen as well as modern science—such as mirror neurons and nervous system co-regulation—we've explored how transmission works, what seekers often experience, and why it continues to play a vital role in awakening today.
